Hand-painted and designed for The Kent Hospice 2024 this sculpture was created in collaboration with Wild in Art, as part of a large Art Trail around Maidstone, Kent. The inspiration for this design comes from the life of 19th century explorer, author and naturalist Julius Lucius Brenchley. Brenchley was born in Maidstone and educated at Maidstone Grammar School. This sculpture design celebrates some of the rare or never-seen-before birds and butterflies recorded in Brenchley’s jottings during the cruise of H.M.S. Curaçao among the South Sea Islands in 1865 and captures the passionate nature of a unique adventurer and collector of art, ethnography and natural history.
